Faculty Mentee Role

What does it mean to be a Faculty Mentee?

Instructors, Assistant Professors and Associate Professors can request a Mentor because they are searching for members of a formal mentoring committee, or because they are searching for one-on-one mentoring. Importantly, strong mentoring enhances career success; all Faculty can benefit from strong mentoring relationships.

Do’s

  • Take the lead in setting up regular meetings with your Mentors.
  • Understand that your Mentors are busy; schedule meetings with plenty of advance notice.
  • Reply to communications from your Mentors within 3-4 business days.
  • Be thoughtful about your goals, skills, and needs, and communicate these clearly to your Mentors.
  • Feel free to reach out to your Mentors as a group, or individually, outside of the formal meetings that you schedule.
  • Prepare for any scheduled committee meetings with Mentors, including completing the Faculty Development Plan forms found here.
  • Send out your Faculty Development Plan several days ahead of any scheduled meeting so that your Mentors have time to read them prior to the meeting.
  • Contact the program administrator at ofd@mssm.edu if you have any questions or concerns regarding your advising relationship or if you have suggestions for how we can improve this program

Don’ts

  • DON’T expect to have instant rapport with your Faculty Mentors. It may take time to develop a relationship, so be patient.
  • DON’T be afraid to admit that you need help with something or that you don’t know how something works at ISMMS.
