How does the matching work?
The programs are Advisee- or Mentee- driven, meaning Student Advisees or Faculty Mentees can search for and request people they'd like to work with. After registration is completed, the platform generates a list of “best matches” based on similarity between responses entered in the registration form. Students and Faculty can then request a potential advisor or mentor from this list. They can also search for Advisors or Mentors using a search function and their own selected criteria. The requested Advisor/Mentor has the opportunity to either accept or decline each request.
What is the time commitment involved for being an advisor oradvisee?
The Student-Alumni Advising Program is purposefully designed to be flexible for advisors and advisees. You and your advisor/advisee have complete control over your relationship and can decide how often you want to meet. Once matched, we ask the Advisor and Advisee to discuss how much time they can commit to the relationship and the duration of their relationship. Our suggestion is one to two hours a month for a minimum of three months. The most important objective is to achieve the goals set for the Advisee; for some matches this will not take several months, for others it will. Ultimately, it is up to the Advisor and Advisee to decide together what works best for them.
For the Faculty-to-Faculty Mentoring Program, Mentors and Mentees should meet at least three times per year in the first year, and twice per year thereafter. Once promoted to Associate Professor, Mentees can decide whether formal mentoring is still needed. If not, we ask that you let us know at ofd@mssm.edu so that the formal mentoring partnership can be dissolved and the Faculty Mentor becomes eligible to mentor another junior Faculty member.
Alumni Advisor
Can I suspend my account without deleting it if I need a break?
Yes. If you find that it is an especially busy time for you or you just need a break, you can suspend your account indefinitely or for a set amount of time by visiting the “My Account” section when you are logged into the platform. Click on the tab that says “Participation.” Uncheck the box that says “I want to be searchable in the Icahn Connect Student-Alumni Program”. Below that, list the start date in which you want to become invisible and the date in which you want to become visible again. If you need to suspend your account indefinitely, just uncheck the box and you will no longer be searchable in the database. When you’re ready to be searchable again, log back in and check the box to be opted back into the program.
How many advisees can I have at one time?
Advisors can select up to three Advisees at one time. This is only encouraged if you truly have the time to commit to three advising relationships.
Will I be bombarded by advisees requesting to speak with me?
No, the platform has parameters set up to limit the number of people who can request you as an Advisor. Once you have accepted a relationship with an Advisee through the platform (i.e. “matched”), you will no longer be available to other Advisees in the database. You do have the ability to have up to three Advisees at a time, if you wish. To adjust the number of Advisees you can take on at one time, log in and click on the “My Account” tab either at the top right- hand side of your screen or in the ribbon on the left-hand side of the screen. Click on the “Participation” tab, and use the drop down to set the max number of advisees you’d like to work with at one time (1, 2 or 3).
What if there is a problem with my advisorship relationship?
If you experience any issues with your Advisor/Advisee or have questions, please reach out to the program manager at alumni@mountsinai.org.
Student Advisee
How many Advisors can I have at one time?
Advisees can select up to two Advisors at one time. This is only encouraged only if you truly have the time to commit to two advising relationships.
I've found an Advisor I'd like to work with, but the button for "Request Advisor" isn't there. Instead there's a button thatsays "Request Unavailable". What does that mean?
The advisorship platform only allows Advisors to work with up to three Advisees at one time. Advisors can select in their account settings how many Advisees they're willing to work with at one time -- one, two, or three Advisees. If you see that the button for "Request Advisor" has been replaced with note that says "Request Unavailable", this means that this Advisor has been maxed out with the number of Advisees they're willing to work with at this time. Once they close out one of the partnerships, they will become available again and you can request them. In the meantime, we suggest you bookmark their profile by clicking the button for "Add Bookmark." This will add a quick-access link to their profile in your Bookmarks tab, meaning you can easily get to their profile and check to see their availability anytime you log into the platform.
What can I offer my advisor?
One of the most common mistakes an Advisee can make is thinking that they do not have anything to offer their Advisor. You can make the relationship valuable for your Advisor too! You can offer a different perspective on your industry, share information about the latest technology or applications, or fill your Advisor in on the goings-on of medical or graduate students following in their paths. You can also share interesting articles, podcasts or books that you think your advisor would enjoy. Do not forget that you have your own powerful network -- if you find someone in your network with whom you think your Advisor may want to be connected, offer to make the connection for your advisor.
Why was I declined?
There may be a variety of reasons why your requested Advisor might have declined you, most of which likely have nothing to do with you personally. It may be an especially busy time for them or they simply do not think it would be a good fit. Do not get discouraged. Log back into the platform and search for and request another Advisor. The ISMMS Network is vast – you will find the right fit for you!

Faculty Mentee
How many Faculty mentors can I have at one time?
You may request up to three Faculty to serve as your mentors through this program.
I've found a Mentor I'd like to work with, but the button for "Request Advisor/Mentor" isn't there. Instead, there's a button that says, "Request Unavailable". What does that mean?
If you see that the button for 'Request Mentor' has been replaced with note that says, "Request Unavailable", this means that this Faculty member has been maxed out with the number of mentors they're willing to work with at this time. Once they close out one of the partnerships, they will become available again and you can request them. In the meantime, we suggest you bookmark their profile by clicking the button for "Add Bookmark". This will add a quick-access link to their profile in your Bookmarks tab, meaning you can easily get to their profile and check to see their availability anytime you log into the platform.
What if there is a problem with my mentoring relationship?
Sometimes, a mentor-mentee pairing does not work out. If you find there are problems with your mentoring relationship, please reach out to us at ofd@mssm.edu. We will work with you to either resolve the issue, or to terminate the formal mentoring relationship, if you decide that is the best solution.
I don’t like the suggested Mentor matches. What do I do?
You do not have to contact any of the Mentors suggested by the algorithm. You always have the option of searching for Mentors by specifying search criteria that align with your personal preferences and identifying Faculty Mentors via this route. The process for requesting Mentors with the search function is the same as requesting the pre-identified Mentors.
Why was my particular Mentor request declined?
All Mentors have the option to decline to enter a formal mentoring relationship with a mentee. There are many possible reasons: for example, they recently accepted other mentees and have now reached the maximum number of mentees, they anticipate being very busy in the near future and would not be able to give you the time needed, they reviewed your mentoring needs in your profile and decided they are not able to offer the services you need. Do not take it personally—use the Search function to identify other mentors.
Faculty Mentor
How many mentees can I have at one time?
You decide how many Faculty mentees you would like to accept. You can control this number in your registration profile and can change it at any time. You can select a number between zero (if you only want to mentor Students) and five.
I received a request from a potential mentee, but I don’t feel this person isa good match. Do I have to be a mentor for that person anyhow?
No, a mentoring relationship must be accepted by both parties for a match to be made. You will receive notifications any time a Mentee requests you as a Mentor. You can review the Mentee’s profile and decide whether this would be an acceptable match. If not, you can decline the request.
My Mentee has not reached out to me. Should I contact my Mentee?
It is the responsibility of the Faculty Mentee to reach out and set meetings with Mentors. Once you have an established mentoring relationship, we encourage you to reach out to your Mentee to encourage them to apply to relevant funding opportunities, notify them of conferences or opportunities to present their work, encourage their participation in leadership and skill workshops, and other opportunities for career development. However, this is not a requirement.
I want to mentor Faculty but I am not interested in advising Students. Isthis possible?
Yes. In your registration profile, you indicate whether you are willing to mentor Students and/or Faculty. You may change this at any time by editing your profile.
I want to advise Students, but I am not interested in serving as a mentor toother Faculty. Is this possible?
